Key Handover

What does it mean?

Key handover takes place at move-in when you receive keys and at move-out when you return them. At move-in, you should verify that all keys work — entrance door, apartment door, storage, laundry room, and possibly garage. The number and type of keys are documented in a key receipt signed by both parties.

At move-out, you must return all keys according to the key receipt. If you have lost or copied keys without permission, the landlord can charge for lock replacement. In modern buildings with electronic key systems, lost keys can be deactivated digitally, but in older buildings physical lock replacement is needed and can be costly.

Key Points

  • Verify that all keys work upon receipt
  • Document number and type in a key receipt
  • Return all keys at move-out — check against the receipt
  • A lost key may require lock replacement at the tenant's expense
  • Never copy keys without the landlord's permission

Practical Tip

At move-in, test all keys immediately — entrance, apartment, storage, laundry room. Report any issues right away. At move-out, collect all keys and return them in person for a receipt — never send keys by mail.
