Key Receipt

What does it mean?

A key receipt is a document confirming which keys you received at move-in and returned at move-out. The receipt should list the number of keys, their type (entrance, apartment, storage, laundry, garage) and any tags or fobs. Both tenant and landlord sign the document.

The key receipt is important to avoid disputes at move-out. If you cannot account for all keys, the landlord can charge for lock replacement and new keys, which can cost several thousand kronor — especially in buildings with coded key systems. Keep your copy of the receipt safe for the entire rental period.

Key Points

  • Documents the number and type of keys received/returned
  • Signed by both tenant and landlord
  • Protects you against claims for keys that were never issued
  • Lock replacement for a lost key can cost thousands of kronor
  • Keep the receipt safe for the entire rental period

Practical Tip

Count and verify all keys at move-in and make sure the key receipt lists the exact number and type. Photograph the keys next to the receipt as additional evidence. Always keep a spare key in a safe place.
