Waste Rooms and Recycling

Environmental Code Ch. 15 (waste management), Waste Ordinance (2020:614)

What does it mean?

The waste room (soprum) is a building's shared space for waste management. In Sweden, source separation is standard, and most properties have separate bins for residual waste, food waste (brown bin), packaging (plastic, paper, metal, glass), and newspapers. Bulky waste (furniture, electronics) normally cannot be left in the waste room and should be taken to the municipal recycling center.

The property owner is responsible for providing functional waste handling with sufficient capacity and clear signage. The municipality handles household waste collection, while packaging collection is managed by FTI (Packaging and Newspaper Collection) or its replacement system. Incorrect sorting can cause an entire bin to be classified as residual waste, increasing the property's costs and ultimately rent.

Key Points

  • Source separation is standard with separate bins for different fractions
  • The property owner is responsible for functional waste handling and clear signage
  • Bulky waste should be taken to the municipal recycling center, not the waste room
  • Food waste is sorted in brown bins and becomes biogas or compost
  • Incorrect sorting increases costs that can affect rent

Practical Tip

Learn the building's sorting system early after moving in. Bulky waste like furniture and electronics must never be left by the waste room — they go to the recycling center. Many municipalities offer free bulky waste pickup a few times per year. Compress packaging and flatten cardboard to save space.

Legal Basis: Environmental Code Ch. 15 (waste management), Waste Ordinance (2020:614)
