Mediation in Rental Disputes

What does it mean?

The Rent Tribunal offers free mediation in disputes between tenants and landlords. The mediation process is informal — both parties present their case and the mediator tries to find a solution that works for everyone.

If mediation doesn't lead to agreement, the Rent Tribunal can make a binding decision in many types of cases. The process normally takes 2–4 months.

Key Points

  • Free mediation via the Rent Tribunal
  • Informal process — no legal representative needed
  • Mediator attempts to reach voluntary agreement
  • If mediation fails, the Rent Tribunal can decide
  • Processing time normally 2–4 months

Practical Tip

Prepare well for mediation — gather evidence, receipts, and written communication. Be open to compromise but know what you're entitled to under the law.
