What does it mean?
A credit check is a standard tool landlords use to assess an apartment applicant's financial reliability. The most common credit reporting services in Sweden are UC (Upplysningscentralen) and Creditsafe. The check shows payment defaults, debt balances with the Enforcement Authority, income, and any bankruptcies. Landlords want to see stable finances and no active payment defaults.
Payment defaults remain in the register for three years for private individuals and can significantly reduce your chances of getting an apartment. If you have defaults, be transparent about them in your application and explain the circumstances. Some landlords accept tenants with older defaults if the rest of their finances look stable. You have the right to see your own credit report free of charge once per year.
