Guarantor for Rental Agreement

What does it mean?

A guarantor (borgen) is when another person takes responsibility for paying rent if the tenant cannot. It's common when tenants lack income, credit history, or are young.

The guarantor is legally responsible if the tenant doesn't pay. There's simple guarantee (landlord must demand from tenant first) and direct guarantee (landlord can demand from guarantor directly).

Key Points

  • Guarantor takes responsibility if tenant doesn't pay
  • Common for young people, students, and newcomers
  • Simple guarantee: landlord claims from tenant first
  • Direct guarantee: landlord can claim from guarantor directly
  • Guarantor's responsibility defined in the agreement

Practical Tip

As guarantor: understand your responsibility before signing. As tenant: ask family or close friends. Check if your municipality offers municipal guarantees.
