Pets in Rental Apartments

What does it mean?

There's no general law prohibiting pets in rental apartments in Sweden. But the lease can include a pet ban, and the landlord can set conditions.

If there's no explicit ban in the contract, you generally have the right to keep pets. However, you're responsible for any damage the pet causes and for ensuring the pet doesn't disturb neighbors. Serious pet-related disturbances can constitute grounds for eviction.

Key Points

  • No general law prohibiting pets
  • Lease may include a pet ban
  • Without a ban in contract, you have the right to keep pets
  • You're responsible for damage and disturbances
  • Serious disturbances can lead to eviction

Practical Tip

Check your lease before getting a pet. If there's no pet clause, you're in a good position. Be a responsible pet owner — clean up, manage noise, and respect neighbors.
