What does it mean?
Nyckelpeng is an illegal payment demanded in exchange for access to a rental contract. It can involve cash, services, or other benefits beyond the normal rent. In Sweden, it is a criminal offense to receive, demand, or broker key money — the penalty can be fines or imprisonment for up to two years.
Key money unfortunately still occurs on the Swedish housing market, particularly in major cities where the housing shortage is greatest. Amounts can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of kronor. Even the person who pays key money may be considered to have participated in the crime. If you are subjected to this, report it to the police — in many cases, victims have recovered their money through legal proceedings.
