Housing Allowance for Newcomers

Social Insurance Code Ch. 96–98

What does it mean?

Housing allowance (bostadsbidrag) is financial support from Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency) that helps cover housing costs. The benefit is aimed at families with children and young adults (18–28 years) with low income. The amount depends on rent level, household income, number of children, and apartment size. It is an important financial resource for newcomers who often have low incomes during the establishment period.

For newcomers, the same rules apply as for all other residents — you need to be registered in Sweden and have a lease. The benefit is applied for monthly at Försäkringskassan, and it is important to report income changes to avoid repayment demands. Establishment allowance counts as income when calculating housing allowance.

Key Points

  • Administered by Försäkringskassan — apply via their website or office
  • Aimed at families with children and young adults (18–28) with low income
  • Amount based on rent, income, number of children, and apartment size
  • Establishment allowance counts as income in the calculation
  • Report income changes immediately to avoid repayment demands

Practical Tip

Apply for housing allowance as soon as you have a lease and population registration. Use Försäkringskassan's calculation tool (forsakringskassan.se) to estimate your benefit before applying. Always report changes in income or household immediately — otherwise you may face repayment demands.
