# Change of Address in Sweden 2026: Flyttanmälan and Mail Forwarding Explained

When you move in Sweden it's easy to mix up "flyttanmälan" (move registration) and "adressändring" (change of address). They sound alike but are two different things – and only one is free and mandatory. Here we untangle what you must do when moving in 2026 so your population registration is correct and your post keeps arriving.

## Flyttanmälan to Skatteverket – free and most important

Your **move registration** goes to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). It updates your **population registration** (*folkbokföring*) – your official address that governs everything from tax and the electoral roll to which health centre and school you belong to.

- **Cost:** free.
- **When:** register no later than one week after moving (you can register in advance with a move-in date).
- **How:** log in to skatteverket.se with BankID, or send a form.
- **Bonus:** Skatteverket forwards your new address to most authorities and many companies automatically.

This is the only legally required step. Miss it and you may be registered at the wrong address, causing problems with post, benefits and contracts.

## Mail forwarding – optional and usually paid

**Mail forwarding** (*eftersändning*) is a separate, commercial service (via Svensk Adressändring). It ensures post addressed to your old address is forwarded to the new one for a period.

- **Cost:** a fee (varies by duration and private vs business).
- **Why:** catches letters from senders who don't have your new address.
- **Time-limited:** choose how long forwarding should last.

Forwarding does not replace move registration – it complements it.

## Who else should you notify?

Skatteverket reaches many, but not all. Run through this list when you move:

- Bank and insurance company
- Employer and unemployment fund
- Health centre, dentist, child health centre
- Streaming, subscriptions and memberships
- Landlord, electricity and broadband providers
- Preschool/school and any associations

## Special situations

- **Children:** guardians register the move for children. With joint custody, both parents' signatures are often required.
- **Cohabitants/family:** each person makes their own registration, but you can do several in one login.
- **Protected personal data:** contact Skatteverket directly – don't use the standard route.

## Pre-move checklist

1. Terminate your old contract in time – see our guide on [notice periods](/en/articles/terminating-rental-contract-sweden-notice-period-2026).
2. Register your move with Skatteverket (free).
3. Order mail forwarding if you want to be sure about your post.
4. Notify bank, insurance, employer and others.
5. Book and do your move-out cleaning – see the [move-out cleaning checklist](/en/articles/sweden-s-move-out-cleaning-checklist-avoid-common-rental-handover-conflicts).

## Frequently asked questions

**Does move registration cost anything?**
No, flyttanmälan to Skatteverket is free. Only mail forwarding costs money.

**How quickly must I register?**
No later than one week after the move, but you can register in advance.

**Does it automatically reach my insurer?**
Many companies get the address via Skatteverket, but not all. Check important contracts yourself.

## Summary

Move registration with Skatteverket is free, mandatory and updates your population registration. Mail forwarding is an optional, paid service that keeps your post following you. Do both as needed, and notify bank, insurance and employer separately. About to move? [Find your next home on Bofrid](/sok-bostad).
